Dear Sir, If you don't mind risking a little, I dare say you may be allowed to take some photographs, but you should have a foreign office passport describing you as an amateur photographer. As your occupation is at the War Office and that will probably be mentioned in your passport, it will probably exercise the minds of some French maires. The best way is to go straight to the maire, see him personally, and tell him what you want to do, having shown your passport. I dare so you would not be kept in prison more than about 24 hours at most as the matter would immediately be referred to the military authorities which decide promptly, unlike the civil tribunals. Wishing you a pleasant trip, I am, dear Sir, Sincerely yours, P.G. Hamerton

This letter, addressed to J.G. Ashley, Esq., The War Office, Pall Mall, is enclosed in its stamped envelope, affixed to rear fly-leaf.
